Memorial Day

Often on this day I post a patriotic image and a verse that expresses gratitude to all who have served our country.  This year my sentiment is the same; however, with several dear family members who have passed in the last couple years, this post is simply to honor them.  For today this is my approach to "Memorial Day."  And, the corresponding image is a flower I drew in order to commemorate the enduring spirit of those who no longer walk among us but always with us.

Still Tiptoeing

As seen in recent posts, this year's edition of the Pella, Iowa, tulip festival was stunningly beautiful with so many giant blooms and amazing colors.  This annual event is simply spectacular and definitely occupies a space in my something-beautiful directory.

It's time to register for one of my virtual classes in which I share the Zentangle© art method of drawing repetitive patterns using simple strokes.  Sound easy?  It is.  And fun.  Anyway, the links below provide all the details, including costs, dates, supply list and so on.  If you are new to this, the introductory class is a great place to start.  And, as Maria Thomas, Zentangle© co-founder, often states, "Anything is possible one stroke at a time."

Magical Strokes

This is a piece that I love as it combines Zentangle with whimsy, gel markers, the sun, clouds and a gorgeous "Zen Gem."  And, it is an example of having an idea, opening the sketch book and putting pen to paper....Magic!  Ahhhhh.....since I can't take my eyes off it, that must mean it is another "something beautiful."

Tulip Time — Pt 2

These images are from my recent visit to Pella, Iowa, for their annual tulip festival.  Gee, the word beautiful comes to mind as I revisit these photos and reflect on that delightful day trip.  Each bloom speaks to me its own language of love…..ahhhhh…. I am the lucky one.

Tulip Time

In these parts tulips are now visible, and their many varieties, colors, shapes, waxy leaves, stalks and large blooms delight me.  Same for you?  Anyway, there is an annual festival in the town of Pella, Iowa, in which tulips are everywhere as the community celebrates its heritage and entertains visitors from far and near.  Indeed it is something beautiful.  Ahhhhhhh....

If you live in the area, it's still possible to make a road trip and catch these radiant vistas -- don't delay!  Early May is the official event, and definitely it is something beautiful.

Tour de Blooms

This time of the year in Iowa the landscape is full of colorful blooms, and, for a person like me who loves most blooming things, each tour de town on my bicycle feels like I won the lottery.  Daffodils, tulips, rhododendrons, jonquils, magnolias ... and I am just getting started.  Anyway, there is a holiday song with lyrics that refer to Christmas as the most wonderful time of the year.....hmmmmm.... I have now made my case for another "most wonderful time of the year."

More Daffys

"Daffodil, daffodil
Yellow trumpet tall and still,
The daffodil tells me it's Spring
Jump in the air and dance and sing."

Tah Dah!

Printed on the inside of some tea boxes are beautiful patterns -- so beautiful, in my opinion, I cannot part with them and often give them a makeover.  The images below show the printed designs.  First, I carefully disassemble the pint-sized containers and then get out the markers.  Finally I rebuild using double-sided tape and the original folds creased in the opposite direction.  Voila!  It's so fun and easy to do.
