Wild Columbine

Perhaps you know this hardy perennial as Canada Columbine, Wild Honeysuckle, Rock Lily or by some other name; however, its intricate features and soft shades of green, reddish-orange and yellow make it a delightful addition to any landscape. With petals that extend into long hollow spurs that end with knobs filled with nectar, this plant is a natural hummingbird feeder. In fact, while taking these pictures, I had the good fortune of seeing Ruby-throated hummers feeding but they didn't stick around after hearing my camera clicks!

A Tribute to Mothers

With Mother's Day drawing near, today's photos honor the significance of motherhood.  After viewing these animals with their new springtime arrivals,  we are reminded of the many roles of mothers, including all the tender moments spent nurturing and satisfying the basic needs of their offspring.  To those who have earned the title of Mom, thanks!

Rose-breasted Grosbeaks

Recently a pair of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks arrived at the feeders in my parents' yard. These birds are large finches with rather large, triangular and cone-like bills. In the first photo you can easily see these features in the male's bill as well as his stunningly beautiful rose red breast. In addition to the rose-colored breast, he also has rose red wing linings that show while he is in flight. Just as much as the male is brilliantly colored and easily visible, the female is the opposite as she tends to feed on the ground and blends in with her surroundings. The second photo demonstrates my point as she is eating sunflower seeds that have fallen from the feeders above. If you did not notice her at first glance, look again! The markings on her head and overall streaked plumes help to identify the female.

Terrific tulips

As promised, today's photos showcase some of the most beautiful images of tulips that I captured this season. Although most of these beauties are now past their prime, I will enjoy the stunning colors throughout the year as I have several of the pictures printed, framed and now adorning the walls of my work space. Dandelions???

Yes! While many folks work diligently to rid their lawns of the pesky perennials, others consider them a valuable, multi-purpose herb. Regardless of your stance on what some simply refer to as weeds, I think you will enjoy today's photos that feature the gorgeous yellow flowers as well as the familiar white, globular seed heads.
