October Tour of Iowa: Harvest Moon

For those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere, the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox is referred to as the Harvest Moon.  This year for us in Iowa the night of September 29 at 10:19 CDT was when there was an official full moon as it reached the point in the sky when it was exactly opposite the sun.  Of course, its name is associated with the grain harvest and farmers working well into the night in moonlit fields.  In addition, Native Americans also associated this full moon with the time when corn, squash and other crops were ready to be picked.  Finally, another interesting detail is that, due to the Harvest Moon's orbital path, for several consecutive nights we enjoy early evening moonrises and extremely bright and full-looking moons.
